Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a serious neurological disease affecting horses, primarily caused by the protozoan parasite Sarcocystis neurona (78% of cases) followed by Neospara hughesi (34% of cases) and rarely though increasingly by Toxoplasma gondii (6.5% of cases. ) This condition is often insidious, as the symptoms can vary and may develop gradually. EPM can lead to severe neurological deficits affecting a horse's coordination, strength, and overall behavior.
The primary transmission route of EPM is through ingestion of the parasite, commonly found in opossum feces. Horses are not the definitive hosts; rather, they are accidental hosts that can experience significant neurological complications as the parasite invades their central nervous system. Symptoms of EPM can include poor coordination, muscle weakness, and changes in behavior, which may lead to misdiagnosis.
Early diagnosis is vital for effective management, often involving blood tests to detect antibodies against the parasite. Treatment typically includes anti-parasitic medications and supportive care, with varying success based on disease severity and prompt intervention. Excitingly, for over 18 years we have been helping horse owners using an all natural product called Karbo. Field studies show that Karbo Combo, or Karbo Pellets paired with Epic II CL, has significantly alleviated EPM symptoms in horses, helping them regain vitality and enhance their quality of life. There is hope for recovery!
