horses with EPM

Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a disease that affects the horse's spinal cord and brain. It is caused by a protozoa which is a parasite that infests several bird species, including cowbirds and grackles. Opossums are the normal host animals, although the parasite must pass through a bird before completing its life cycle in the opossum.
EPM mimics many other neurological conditions. However, the neurological symptoms associated with EPM can include the following:
- Lameness or weakness
- A lack of coordination and difficulty in moving
- A loss of balance
- Seizures

The use of Karbo ComboTM, (or Karbo PelletsTM WITH Epic II CL) has, in field studies, proven very effective in resolving the symptoms of EPM.
The Karbo Formula consists of encapsulated enzymes, vitamins, bacteria and large numbers of mannan and glucan oligosaccharides. In addition, the formula also contains glycocomponents necessary for tying up and neutralizing various toxins.

COLIC in Horses

Colic, by far, is the number one killer of horses. Compared to other deadly conditions, the cases associated with colic experience the highest fatality rate. Colic in Domestic animals can be an emergency situation and must be treated quickly to save severely affected individuals.
Current Therapies for Horses with Colic
We recommend the use of EPIC II CL® when dealing with Colic. Once the animal is restored to health however, we recommend Karbo Combo® be given daily at the listed maintainance level.
EPIC II CL® is recommended because it is a liquid and acts fast. (NOTE: Please plan ahead. It doesn't make much sense to pay $45 in next day shipping charges, for a $38 dollar product! Keep a gallon on hand.)
Epic II CL® works by dilating many of the blood vessels in the bowel, increases peristalsis (Peristalsis is the rhythmic contraction of smooth muscles to propel contents through the digestive tract), ties up harmful bacterial reactions and by the binding and detoxifying the many toxins (including ammonia)in the animal.
Keep in mind the object is not to sedate the bowel or animal, but to increase peristalsis and move the offending material our of the bowel and also tie up toxins that can produce severe health and life threatening situations.
Heaves

Heaves is the common term for chronic obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) The illness is similar to asthma in humans in that the horse has trouble breathing. Especially breathing out. Heaves causes inflammation and spasm within the lungs of the horse.
We recommend a daily dosage of Karbo Combo® or Epic II CL®. Most of our customers prefer to use the Karbo Combo® because of it's added benefits, but in terms of the horse with Heaves, either can be used successfully.
What does Karbo Combo® or Epic II CL® do?
Both of these products work by dilating the lung capillaries. By doing so the core area is provided for oxygen exchange. When oxygen exchange is created, a measure of improvement is noted.
Most equine with chronic emphysema, including those with a "Heave Line", seem to improve to the extent that the animal can handle short periods of vigorous exercise.
NOTE: Response is strictly on an animal-to-animal bases, depending on the lung pathology. The amount given is governed by the severity of the lung involvement. Amounts listed below can be adjusted up or down. Recommended amounts for both EPIC II CL® and Karbo Combo® are listed. One or the other can be given, though NOT BOTH. We recommend using Karbo Combo® because it has all the benefits of the Epic® formula with the added benefits of the Karbo® formula.
Laminitis (Founder)

Laminitis occurs most often in horses due to grain or high protein overload. Laminitis is the constriction and depletion of the arterial blood supply through the terminal arch within the hoof, caused by histamines and toxins released in the body.
The most common clinical sign of laminitis is Stiff and Soreness in the front legs.
Without proper action and preventive measures, the depletion of the blood vessels can cause severe pathology. In severe cases, the animal can become permanently lame.

West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus
The West Nile Virus is an anthropod-borne virus that causes central nervous disease in horses, as well as humans and birds. Sudden death is not common with the West Nile Virus, but euthanasia or death are normally the result from other complications caused by the virus such as pneumonia, cellulites, neuropathies, myopathies and multi-organ failure.
The most common clinical signs include:
- Muscle Fasciculations (muscular twitching of contiguous groups of muscle fibers)
- Change in mentation (the process of thinking)
- Weakness
- Cranial nerve deficits
Mortality Rates are anywhere between 30% - 60% depending on the severity of the infection.

Lyme Disease in the Equine

Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by the spirochetal (corkscrew shaped) bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is most commonly transmitted by the bite of infected Ixodes spp ticks, commonly referred to as "deer ticks" or "black legged ticks".
Horses living in Lyme disease endemic regions may become infected with Borrelia burgdorferi via the bite of infected Ixodes species ticks.
Clinical signs (symptoms) of Lyme disease appear in less than 10 % of horses that are infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. The most common symptoms are lameness and behavioral changes. The lameness is usually associated with larger joints (not the foot), and frequently shifts from limb to limb. The horse may appear to have a generalized stiffness. Fever may or may not be present. Occasionally, laminitis (an inflammation of the tissues inside the hoof wall) has been associated with Lyme disease.

Getting the most out of vaccination

The proper preparation of the immune system in animals is critical for all vaccination procedures.
Vaccination failures in most programs are directly related to inadequate reactions by the animals Humeral and Cellular immune systems. Animals that do not have an adequate immune system development do not build proper resistance to the organisms they were vaccinated for and do not establish immunity.
Stimulating the immune system prior to vaccinations assures the owner that the animal has a good chance of developing a proper immune response to the diseases that were recommended in the vaccine.
Vaccination without proper immune system stimulation and preparation leads to many vaccination failures and discouraging results
Research shows that if the immune systems are working right - very little clinical disease is evident.
